Hi guys! My name is Jaden Lessaris. I am currently a junior in high school at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. I was born on July 10th coincidentally, the same day my dad was born. Growing up, he was my favorite person to be around. He would always do the things I wanted to do, even if he didn't want to. He was my dad and I looked up to him. Throughout my life, I was told he was struggling with drug addiction, but I never wanted to believe it. I would visit him every few weeks until I was around 11 years old. This was when I realized it was true, he did have an addiction. For the next few years, the time I spent with him lessened and I only saw him twice within three years. We didn’t call or text as much as we used to. I knew deep down something wasn’t right but I was too afraid to reach out. If I could change that, I would. At 14 years old, I got the call that he had overdosed and passed away. The regret hit me for avoiding him. My dad was never perfect, but he was my dad. It's been two and a half years and I’ve been trying to find a way to honor his memory. Although I can’t help my dad, I would like to help others fight their addiction. Bringing awareness to drug and alcohol addiction is so important to me, everyone deserves a second chance.
