Recovery Rocks!

My name is Eva and I am an addict. Today I am very grateful for my life and everyone in it but it wasn't always like that. I started drinking and using drugs when I was around 12 years old. I like the way it made me "not feel". I had issues with sexual, physical, and mental abuse as a child and I didn't realize that I was running from the fear, anger, and pain of my past. I have used just about every drug out there, in one form or another. When I found heroin, everything changed. I could be high and numb, but heroin took me places I never wanted to go. I was strung out on heroin for over 20 years. I sold my body on the streets to pay for my addictions, I have been to jail countless times and prison twice. I seemed to find myself in abusive relationship after abusive relationship but I didn't care. If I did not have a Higher Power with me when I was using, I would not be here today. I have had guns held on me, been robbed, beaten, raped, drug by a car and countless other events that should have killed me. My family and their friends were praying for me and I truly believe, that is why I am still here. A little over six years ago, I knew I was done and I wanted out. I wanted a change and the court system gave me that chance. I was given another prison sentence but it was suspended so that I could complete an outpatient drug program. That program saved my life and taught me how to live without the use of drugs. Before I got there, I didn't want to live anymore. My clean date is March 18, 2008. That is a day I will cherish above all others. Since that day, my life has completely changed. I started community college when I had three months clean and sober. I graduated with an Associate degree in 2011. In five weeks, I will be graduating with a Bachelor degree, with honors from a state university. I am still working on cleaning up the wreckage of my past but that is okay. My family is back in my life and I have an extended family in Narcotics/Alcoholic Anonymous. I am living proof that RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE. After being a heroin addict (among other things) for over 20 years, I am now drug free and I love the life I have. I still have problems and issues that normal life gives but I would take those over what I had when I was using any day. RECOVERY ROCKS!!!
