My Life as a Junkie's Girlfriend
My Life as a Junkie's Girlfriend
For over a year after, he talked about getting clean but just never really sought help for his addiction.? By this time, I was also starting to get caught up in that lifestyle, but was able to keep my head seeing all those people and what drugs had done to their lives.? One day, we were visiting his mom and she saw the track marks up and down his arm.? Shortly after, he checked himself into rehab.? I was so thankful for that.? For once, I knew he was safe and I didn??t have to spend my nights sitting up making sure he was breathing, worrying constantly over another overdose, or worrying about police.? I was finally able to lift some of the weight off my chest and focus on myself.? Due to money issues, he checked himself out of rehab after a week.? I was really disappointed because life went back to focusing around him and his addiction.? I was no better than I had been before, but I was slowly gaining the strength to help him fight rather than help his addiction.
Time moved on and he was clean for a little over a month, but quickly relapsed.? This time, it was worse than before.? Mixing whatever he could find would lead to him to black out for days at a time, unable to remember what had happened.? He was completely out of control.? I told him that I could no longer be a part of his life if he continued to use and I would no longer help pay his bills or provide him a place to stay. He made the decision that he was going to get clean and sober up. With the support from my family (who had found out about his addiction during his first stint in rehab and were extremely supportive of his recovery), his family, and his sober friends, he went back into rehab.? Today, he has been sober for 10 months.? I??m so proud of his recovery and the help he has received.
Although most of my story covers his recovery, addiction affects the lives of family and friends, as much as the addict.? My life has forever changed due to my relationship with Brandon.? My understanding of drug and alcohol addiction has greatly changed as well and I am now going to school for substance abuse counseling to help addicts and families recover from addiction.? For almost two years, my life revolved around my boyfriend??s addiction, taking over my whole life as well as his.? Even when I was not with him, I was always worried if I would receive a phone call that he had overdosed and died.? If you are struggling with addiction, please get help.? There is so much more to life than drugs.? Recovery doesn??t come overnight and takes a lot of hard work and inner strength, but with the help of family, friends, and professionals, it is possible.? People are willing to help if you ask for it.?
