My Son

My Son

My Son would never even take an aspirin, but things spiraled out of control when he had a car accident at 16 and was prescribed Vicodin for pain. He stole everything that wasn't nailed down from our home and his siblings, was thrown out of our house many times for continuing to use and prescription pain med use gave way to Heroin addiction when pain killers were no longer available. He finally got into a methadone clinic program and stayed a client there for 7 years. It was so bad and they kept him at a140-150 mg dose. He went into rapid detox that set him into a relapse back to Heroin. He was arrested, but has now been clean for 3 years. We live in a community without many resources: no halfway house, recovery house, detox unit, in-patient services, only out-patient help and that is limited as well. As a parent I have learned a lot from this experience, mainly that addiction happens in all families and that we must arm ourselves with all the information we can to promote healthy youth development. This is a disease that must be managed with care. Our entire family supports prevention, treatment and recovery and are very proud of our son's commitment to remain in recovery.
