A Nurse's Redemption

A Nurse's Redemption

My addiction didn't surface until I was 34 years old. I was a wife, mother of two small children, and a registered nurse. I was prescribed pain medication for a surgical procedure. I found that the meds gave me a false sense of happiness and security. I was overwhelmed in my personal life and at work, and to me, the opioids gave me an escape. After my prescription ran out my addiction quickly escalated to injectable opioids. This went on for almost a year. I hid my addiction from my husband, my children, and work. I was barely functioning. The shame that I felt was crippling. I finally decided to tell my husband. He was supportive and immediately reported my addiction to my supervisor at work. I entered rehab and have been clean for 4 years now. I was able to keep my license as a nurse, and feel incredibly blessed that I found recovery. There isn't a day that goes by??that I'm not happy and appreciative of ?my sobriety. I regained my life! I am now a nurse in recovery. I see addiction and alcoholism very differently now.
