Cracked out musician

I smoked crack for seven years and wasn't until I started making NA meetings and working the program the way it was suggested to me that's when I got clean and stayed clean for eight years, now a day at a time. My life was going down hill quickly and it wasn't coming back using my will. I needed to do something or I was going to die or go insane. I went to rehabs and when I came out i stayed clean for awhile but always relapsed. I never did what the counselors told me to do because I had all the answers. I figure since I was clean for the thirty days I was in there i was able to not use anymore. I thought i was strong enough to do it on my own. I didn't make meetings. I never did any after care that was suggested. The suggested program is: make meetings, get a sponsor, read the literature, do service in the meetings, and the most important of all is do step work. Working the 12 steps with a sponsor and using the Narcotics Anonymous Step Working Guide is the best thing I did to sustain my recovery. I realized I had to develop a network of recovering addicts to talk about what I was going through when i wanted to use. I needed to tell somebody that I was having thoughts of using drugs again and they would listen and offer suggestions that kept me clean. Today I play drums with the World Famous Duke Ellington Orchestra and travel the world.?I owe everything to Narcotics Anonymous and my network of other recovering addicts that keep me clean one day at a time.

Thank You
