Clean and in recovery for 29 years ! !
My name is Malik R. I live in North Jersey and I have just celebrated 29 years clean on December 27th 2012. My story started in Camden NJ , where I started using heroin at the age of 14. It was the cool thing to do when I was 14 living in the city of Camden and you became the coolest guy around if you were a heroin user back then. But later in life I found out that it was the beginning of my end ! I did graduate from school because I was a smart student and even though I only went to school just enough to pass my classes with a C+ average, I was only fooling myself. I became a theif , a pimp , a robber and anything else to obtain my drug. After going to jail and overdosing numerous times I decided that I needed help. So I went to a detox and becaue I served in the US army I was sent to the VA Hospital in East Orange NJ. I attended meetings in Jersey City and Bergen County and Newark NJ, got a sponsor and worked the 12 steps to the best of my ability. I learned that as long as I do not participate in my old people, places, and things and don't pick up that I will be alright. The message is hope and no addict that participates in this program need ever die from active addiction.
