35 years old, without my tranquilizers that I'd been taking 3 times a day- no access to a new script, as my doctor had passed away- I made a decision to quit the pills. Three days later, I decided I had taken my last drink....which I came to be doing daily- anything that was available. 6 days into this process, I was hallucinating from withdrawal and a co worker took me to the hospital. I was shaking like crazy. Doctors told me if I did not stay, I would likely die that day. I told them I had to do it my way, and drove myself to a hospital closer to home. On my way there, I had an out of body experience and felt it was over. Made it to the hospital and they detoxes me properly, with medication. I had no idea what risk I was putting myself in. Stayed in treatment as long as insurance would allow.

That was 27 years ago. Since that time, I have worked with others. I became a Certified Drug and Alcohol counselor and have had the good fortune of working with addicts and alcholics for 25 years. What I know, is that my experience was to be a teacher for others struggling. If I had died that day, I would never have found that out.
