In memory of Markeda Mateo

Created by Detra Brown

Markeda Mateo

My beautiful baby passed from an overdose. I miss her so much. I wish she would have talked to us. I wish that those who knew about her drug use would have come to us so that we could have done something to prevent this. She left behind a son and a daughter ages 5 and 3. I wish this could have been prevented if she would have just talked to us and let us help her.

Dear Ms. Brown, I haven't seen you for at least two years and you've moved since then. Markeda was always a bright spirit. I can barely remember-- throughout the years I've known her--not having a smile. I can't fathom her being gone; I know she had her difficulties but she was a loving and giving human being; I count her as one of my best friends. We spoke on the phone and texted. We were talking about my finishing my Master's degree soon and she was so excited about finishing her school and having a job lined up; I was so proud of her. My gran used to say, about a young death, "Some people are just too good to live in this world." I think of that when, I think of Markeda. Love, Rachel

I lost my daughter at 20 due to overdose, 10 days after returning home from a 90 day rehab. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
