Through my work with Figlia, I am dedicating myself to help change the conversation around the disease of addiction – one that has deeply impacted my family. I’d like to take this opportunity to be vulnerable when talking about my experience with being the child of an alcoholic. This is something I have never shared publicly before, but felt that now would be the right time as I want to encourage others to have these conversations with me. In doing this, I hope to inspire others to have important and honest conversations with their families about alcoholism and other substance use disorders. This conversation is not one that comes easy and is surely not one that seems comfortable at first, but I can say from personal experience that being able to relate to people that share similar stories has been my greatest gift. Alcoholics often feel that they are not worthy of the things that they deserve. To me, this is the most heartbreaking part of the disease. It is what motivates me to do whatever I can eliminate the stigma of addiction to help those who are struggling feel that they are worthy and that there is hope.
